Learning A New Language With Foreign Language Learning Aids

Learning a new language can help you in many ways. It can broaden your horizons and help you learn about other cultures. According to the Center of Immigration Studies, one in five Americans speak a language other than English at home.  Below, we list a few reasons why you should take some time to learn a new language.

The Top Foreign Languages STUDIED in the United States

According to infoplease, these are the top five foreign languages studied in the United States:

1. Spanish

2. French

3. American Sign Language

4. German

5. Italian

Spanish is by far the leader in foreign languages; with 790,000 speakers in the U.S. French has approximately 197,757 speakers. Overall enrollment in foreign language classes has dropped across the board except for American Sign Language and Chinese.

An Advantage When Traveling Abroad

Advantage While Traveling

When you are preparing for vacation and are traveling to a country that does not speak English, learning the local language can help immerse you into your destination. You will be able to eat at the restaurants locals go to because you can speak the language. You can communicate clearly with your hotel staff and make new friends.  Languages can help you practice your trial-and-error skills. Locals will appreciate your efforts, even if your pronunciation of words is incorrect.

If you do not plan on visiting a country that speaks the language you’re learning, you can find a pen pal to talk about your culture, and learn about another. Learning another language can also help you improve your memory and expand your attention span.

Study Techniques

Study Techniques

If you’ve never studied another language before, you might be overwhelmed with how you can start studying. Conversation is the best way to study. If you do not have a friend or acquaintance that speaks the foreign language you’re studying, grab a set of flash cards or a pocket dictionary and study some of the most common words. You can also use an app like Duolingo to help hone your listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills.
