5 Ways to Be Creative with Your Bulletin Board

It’s easy to make your bulletin board look great during the holidays or other special events. However, it can be difficult to get creative with your bulletin board throughout the slower months of the school year. You don’t have to settle for a drab bulletin board. If you’re feeling stuck, here are a couple of ways to liven up a boring bulletin board.

Pick a Theme

Pick a Theme

Once you decide on a theme for your bulletin board, it is fairly easy to develop ideas based around it. Choose a theme based on a topic you are currently discussing with your class. If you are discussing the Civil War, create a theme based on that time period. If your class is learning about Sir Isaac Newton, create an apple tree. You simply need to look towards your current topics of study to get a plethora of ideas.

Inspire Your Students

You can never go wrong by using your bulletin board to motivate and inspire your class. Choose a popular quote or list character traits that all students should aspire to be. Add words like “Kind” when you see a student being kind to another classmate or add students names under each trait when you see them behaving in a way that you would like to acknowledge them for.

Make It a Game

Your bulletin board can be functional, as opposed to simply decorative. You can choose to add a tic-tac-toe board, divide your class into teams and allow your students to “make their move” after they answer a question correctly. Similarly, you can even put your own spin on the classic Wheel of Fortune by letting students pick a letter and take guesses at what the key phrase is. Jeopardy, anyone?

Turn to Pop Culture

Pop culture is never lacking in content to get students excited. Is there a song that all of the kids love? Maybe a new television program that has all of the kids talking? Choose lyrics or characters from songs and shows your students already love and get creative with your bulletin board. For older students, you can also try to find ways to tie in their favorite social media platforms. Find ways to tie those pop culture topics in with your current curriculum to get your students excited about their studies.

Put It to a Vote

When all else fails, let your students decide the theme of the bulletin board. You can even assign part of the decorating task to them, as well, by having them create portions of the board as part of their art project. It is their board too, after all!

Once you are able to get out of the seasonal mindset, it becomes easier to get creative with your bulletin board. Bulletin boards can serve as decorative pieces, sources of inspiration, game boards, reward centers and more. The choice is yours! Look around you for ideas and get your creativity flowing today!
