How it All Began

As part of his job, Dr. Spencer Silver, a 3M scientist was tasked with researching adhesives. In the process, he discovered an adhesive that lightly stuck to surfaces but he did not quite know what to do with it. Around the same time, his fellow 3M scientist, Art Fry, needed a bookmark to stick to paper without damaging it. He attended Silver’s seminar on microspheres and had an ‘aha’ moment. The two scientists partnered together to develop a product that allowed them to write messages on their new notes that could be served as communication pieces.
